Kidney disease

Kidney disease remains a very prevalent disease in the United States. In fact, 1 out of every 7 U.S. adults (~ 30 million people) already have kidney disease and 1 out of every 3 U.S. adults are at risk for kidney disease.

Kidney disease progresses through 5 stages: Stage 1 (mild) to Stage 5 (severe).

Most people (96%) have early onset kidney disease (stages 1 and 2) however 48% late stage 4) are not even aware of having kidney disease. Early diagnosis leads to improved long-term outcomes. Risk factors include high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and a family history of kidney disease.


Dialysis

Dialysis is an artificial means of taking place of the kidneys (blood or through the peritoneum) and is becoming more prevalent in the United States.


Kidney Transplantation

Kidney transplantation provides a life saving organ to a person without the use of their own kidneys. Kidney donation is currently referred to as giving the gift of life.


Hypertension

High blood pressures is a common and dangerous condition of which the pressure in your blood vessels is higher than it should be. Hypertension afflicts 1 of 3 U.S. adults (~75 million people). In fact, 7 out of every 10 people having their first heart attack and 8 out of every 10 people having their first stroke have high blood pressure. Kidney disease is also a major risk factor for high blood pressure. 1 in every 5 U.S. adults with high blood pressure do not know that they have it.

Kidney stone prevention is the primary management for kidney stones. Dietary changes and/or medical therapy can change your life.
